Co-Founder and Chief Scientist, Working Trees

Aakash Ahamed

Dr. Aakash Ahamed is a remote sensing scientist using instruments deployed on phones, drones, planes, and satellites to understand the water and carbon cycles. He is an Assistant Professor of Geospatial Sciences at Cal Poly SLO, and the Co-founder and Chief Scientist of Working Trees, a start-up focused on leveraging mobile sensing technology to improve science and transparency in tree carbon monitoring. Ahamed has authored or co-authored 9 publications on the use of remote sensing data to solve problems in water resources, agriculture, forestry, and natural hazards; and received the Exceptional PhD Thesis award from Stanford University’s Geophysics Department, for his thesis, “Advancing the Use of Remote Sensing Data and Models to Understand Hydrological Processes in California”. He previously worked as a research scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, as a remote sensing scientist at a Series C precision agriculture startup (Ceres Imaging), served as a National Geographic Explorer, and interned as a GIS analyst at the World Wildlife Fund for Nature in Washington, DC. He received his masters degree in Earth and Environmental Sciences on a full scholarship from Boston College, and holds a bachelor’s degree (with honors) in Geosciences from Franklin and Marshall College.
