A physician-scientist turned farmer, Dr. Tom Croghan is the owner and winemaker at The Vineyards at Dodon in Davidsonville, MD. Internationally recognized for its agroecological approach to wine growing, Dodon seeks to restore functioning ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, sequester carbon dioxide, and reduce its chemical and physical footprint.
Raised in rural West Virginia, Croghan holds an M.D. from West Virginia University, and he trained in Internal Medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Cellular Immunology at the University of North Carolina and Stanford. Until December 2022, Croghan was a Senior Fellow at Mathematica Policy Research, where his research and policy analysis focused on treating mental health conditions in primary care settings, measuring and incentivizing healthcare quality, and racial and ethnic disparities in access and quality of healthcare. Croghan’s essays on farming, viticulture, and Maryland agricultural policy have appeared in the Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, and Maryland Matters. He has served on the Board of Directors of Future Harvest, a regional regenerative agriculture organization that trains new and experienced farmers in agroecology methods. He is a lead team member for The Porto Protocol’s Living Vineyards project.
